  15. Grapefruit's Sour Rap

  17. <p>    The most serious case people usually make against
  18. grapefruit is that it's a bit too tart. But last week consumer
  19. groups in South Korea launched a boycott of U.S. grapefruit
  20. because they believe the produce is contaminated with Alar, a
  21. chemical preservative and suspected carcinogen that has been
  22. used by apple processors.
  23. </p>
  24. <p>    The South Korean protest was triggered when a test
  25. requested by consumer groups showed the Alar content of U.S.
  26. grapefruit to be 0.5 parts per million or less. But since the
  27. lab equipment was not accurate enough to measure below that
  28. level, this was "equivalent to a finding of no Alar," says Dan
  29. Gunter, executive director of Florida's department of citrus.
  30. Says he: "Alar is not used on grapefruit." The Korean government
  31. declared U.S. grapefruit safe, but American growers fear the
  32. sour taste may linger.
